As mentionned several months ago, the Brigitte Bardot Foundation has been helping J.A.C.K. since 2009 and thanks to its precious support & trust, our Sanctuary has been able to achieve great and wonderful things for our chimpanzee and bushbaby boarders!

The Nursery 2 Project started in 2012 and aimed in building 3 night quarters for the nursery group. These new facilities will be attached to an open air playground and, by means of a tunnel,  will be linked to the Nursery 1 area. We talked about this project already many months ago.

A new chimp orphan arrived at the sanctuary several days ago: Mata, a young male  a bit older than 1 year old.

J.A.C.K. gave the opportunity to 3 young students (grade 8) to come at the Sanctuary for a short work experience. Our sanctuary welcomed a new orphan the day after Kala's passing. Late in the afternoon a man came at the gates of our sanctuary with a young female chimpanzee. Yes, I believe this small bat was lucky! It was found stuck inside our office the other day and Franck managed to catch it in order to relesae it at the sanctuary.

Since many people are asking to come and stay at the Sanctuary, we have decided building a volunteer camp. A volunteer program  could provide help but also bring in some money for the chimps!  Tika was introduced to the main group early April. His best friend of the new group was young male called Kala who always protected him from the others.

I can't find the words in English to express how bad I feel....

Introduction process had to be stopped as Tommy's arm infection started again: pus mixed with blood came out of  Tommy's last wound the other day and vet Jean-Claude was called immediately.

As mentionned last week, Tommy had to be operated because of the infection he had in his arm.

Last Sunday, a friend and surgeon accepted to help us for free and donated all his time and knowledge to save Tommy's arm. At J.A.C.K. everyone was extremely nervous but confident as we knew Dr Nestor and his assistant would do all their best!

No good news for today: we had an X-ray of Tommy's arm and he has osteomyelitis.

For many years we have seen ivory, different animal skins, rhino horns, etc for sale on the streets of the city of Lubumbashi and through our NGO we have decided to act against that illegal trade.

These little mammals are poached for their meat and because of their small size, about 3 to 5 adult galagos are needed to compose a local dish.

Some of you know already about the primates near Goma that have been abandoned by their owners wishing to start a sanctuary and who left the DRC because they ran out of money.

5 chimpanzees (2 adults and 3 youngsters), 1 red-tailed guenon and 1 black mangabey were found in bad conditions (dehydration, malnutrition)  -  some even showed signs of depression, especially the adult chimpanzee female...

Hi again,

Today was Maïka’s 3rd day of tough treatment and she started drinking and eating. Her eyes are bright and it seems she pays more attention to things around her. I can now say Maïka has come out of that lethargic state she had been in for the last week and we all feel very happy about it!

Last week was extremely tough!

Yes, some of you know already that we at J.A.C.K. have been struggling against a very contagious disease. Chimps simply collapsed of high fever, cough, wheeze and shortness of breath.

Yes, last week Franck attended the PASA meeting at the Columbus Zoo (Ohio) where he was given time to present the most recent progress of JACK.

Two weeks ago, Tristan (Doguy's Guardian Angel), managed to be in contact with several vets specialised in eye issues and, for more substantial diagnostics, we sedated both Doguy and Shasa (the eldest female of the group also having a white spot on the cornea...)

After a long wait at the Goma airport, Tongo and Faustin finally managed to get on the plane and to take off. The flight wasn't that long, but these few hours lasted for ages....Franck and I were very impatient !!

Finally, late in the evening, Faustin and Tongo arrived. Franck and the authorities were waiting for him.

Dear Friends,

Winter started a few weeks ago. Yes, here in Central Africa, we have a cold season from May untill end of October. Nights are colder, 5 to 8 degrees Celsius (41-46°Fahrenheit) which is quite chilly as we are used to 24 to 28 degrees Celsius (75-82°Fahrenheit).

Angeline is the first surrogate mother we had just after the fire. Before the tragedy, two young men had been in charge of the babies during day but decided to stop working when JAK and TOUZO died.

Dear All,

 

Let's share that surprising news. A new young chimpanzee orphan has recently been seized by local authorities and brought at the Refuge Centre. SEKI is a young male of about 3 1/2 to 4 years old and is in an amazing condition: his fur is beautiful, his physical condition is great and SEKI doesn't show any sign of malnutrition nor mistreatment.

Hi Everyone!
